How to Style a Small Living Room

I am not an interior designer, nor do I claim to be one. I have just looked for ways to make our small space more inviting and cozy.

Most of you know that we live in a two-bedroom condominium, and although we have listed our place to sell I thought I would answer a commonly asked question — how do I style the space and keep it clean with three (four including the baby) kids around? The short answer is I tidy throughout the day with kids’ help and we never leave the house without cleaning up.

Creating an open space concept in a small condominium

Our Living Room room is open to our Dining Room which is open to our Kitchen. So, the best way to define our Living Room space is by facing the couch and/or the chairs away from the Dining Room. A while back, I picked this deep blue color of couch with a matching ottoman and two chairs. (It’s not a major update but you can see what this space looked like before HERE). The couch helps define a small space and allows you to create a more open space in the Living Room. It adds dimension to the area and allows you to make the space look bigger than it is. Then you add a lamp on one side, a side table on the other and a coffee table in the front.

Continue with adding warmer tones by finding abstract prints in soft, warm colors that will blend into your setting but yet standout just enough to make the space aesthetically pleasing. I partnered with Desenio for these prints and frames, and picked the Geometric Shades No.1 and the, Geometric Shades No.2, both in size 50×70 cm for above the couch. The frames are neutral wood color and go perfectly with the deep blue couch. Both prints and frames are great quality. Then, to create some texture and make it even cozier, I picked these vintage pink colored throw pillows. The rug was the final piece that I added and it looks simply perfect. I also picked out the print, In The Reeds No.2 in size 40×50 for the opposite wall, as an accent above the chair.

Styling a living room space

1. Couch

2. Lamp on one side

3. Side table on the other side

4. Coffee table in the front

5. Add a rug for texture (mine is from Loloirugs called Thei-The-07 Natural, size 10×10)

6. Pick abstract prints that blend in (I have the Geometric Shades No.1 and the, Geometric Shades No.2, both in size 50×70 cm for above the couch from Desenio)

7. Throw pillows for texture

8. Chair on the side to define the space

9. Ottoman for additional seating

10. Media center on the opposite side of the couch

11. Add fake (or real) indoor plants to fill the gaps

12. Floating shelves (which I never got to) create space more welcoming and add dimension

13. Add screen saver to your TV so it’s not just a boring black cover (like mine!)

14. Add a basket on the side of the Chair

15. Be done!

It’s actually not hard to style a small living room, in fact it’s super easy. You just have to be careful to pick the right pieces so that they open up the space and make it seem bigger than it is. You want brighter pieces that are inviting and subtle touches of different texture. Starting with a sofa on a wall is how I begin this space decor. Of course, you can do this many ways.

I do have a discount code for you from Desenio, if you’d like to get your own prints use code: MOTHERHOODCHARM for 25% off u til September 3rd. Please note that the code does not apply to frames and handpicked/personalized prints.

Now, I am excited to find our dream home one day and cannot wait to style it. But for now, I love making this space our Home.
